Hay Fever – Is ‘Healthy Food’ Making It Worse?

Is 'Healthy Food' Triggering Your Hay Fever Symptoms?Did you know that eating fruit and veg can actually make your hay fever worse?

New research shows that almost 40% of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) sufferers also react to one or more of fruits, nuts, vegetables or spices  (well I could have told them that!). I think in my work it might be higher actually.

Oral Allergy Syndrome

This is a label that has been given to an allergic reaction in the mouth. I am not keen on using labels but I have used it here just to explain what it is.

In my work I have found that eating any foods that you are allergic to can weaken you immune system and trigger your hay fever symptoms. That is why I advise that as well as treating and clearing pollen, we look at any allergies to foods, even healthy ones and treat and clear those as well.

However fruit and veg etc. are causing particular problems because the protein found in certain pollens is similar to that found in some foods. This puts hay fever sufferers at risk of developing an allergic reaction called oral allergy syndrome.  (You can have oral allergy syndrome without having hay fever).

Lindsey McManus from Allergy UK says, “15 years ago oral allergy syndrome was considered unusual but now it is increasingly commonplace. The condition is caused by the proteins in some fruit, nuts, vegetables and spices triggering a cross-reaction in someone with hay fever. When they eat a food that shares similar proteins as the pollen, it can cause an allergic reaction, such as, an itchy mouth, swelling or tingling of lips and tongue.”

A Whole Year Of Hay Fever Symptoms?!

If you are reacting to these ‘healthy foods’, at the very least they could make your hay fever symptoms worse. Or they could trigger hay fever symptoms that could potentially last the whole year!

Top 5 allergens in the UK

According to Allergy UK,  the top 5 allergens in the UK are:

  1. Pollen
  2. Food
  3. House dust mite
  4. Pets
  5. Medication

It seems that there is nowhere left to hide doesn’t it? I mean if you go out the pollen will get you, if you eat food it could trigger a reaction. So you decide to stay inside but what about dust mites and pets? And the medication that you are taking? mmmmm ……………………..
